Air quality monitoring with Oizom sensors at waste deposits – Case Study

18 February 2025

Waste deposits generate a complex mix of pollutants, and odors resulting from organic waste decomposition affect the quality of life in surrounding areas.

Waste deposits are a significant source of air pollution, generating a complex mix of gases including methane, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and volatile organic compounds. The odors resulting from the organic decomposition of waste affect the quality of life in surrounding communities and can pose real health risks for both workers and nearby residents.

Oizom Odosense at Brașov waste deposit

The Oizom Odosense monitoring station was deployed at the Brașov waste deposit to continuously track air quality parameters and odor levels. The station monitors key pollutants including hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), ammonia (NH₃), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), and meteorological parameters such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and humidity. This comprehensive dataset enables operators to understand the relationship between operational activities, weather conditions, and odor dispersion patterns.

Results and impact

The deployment of Oizom sensors at the waste deposit has provided operators with actionable real-time data to manage odor complaints and optimize waste handling operations. The continuous monitoring has enabled early identification of odor peaks, correlation with specific operational activities, and evidence-based responses to community concerns. The Oizom platform's automated alerts allow site managers to take immediate corrective actions, such as adjusting waste covering procedures or applying odor neutralizers during unfavorable wind conditions.

This case study demonstrates the value of continuous air quality monitoring at waste management facilities and reinforces Klarwin's commitment to providing state-of-the-art environmental monitoring solutions through its partnership with Oizom. The combination of advanced sensor technology, real-time data analytics, and cloud-based reporting creates a comprehensive framework for proactive environmental management.
