Why industrial wastewater treatment is no longer optional

European and Romanian legislation on industrial wastewater is becoming ever stricter. The new EU Directive 2024/3019 imposes additional secondary, tertiary and quaternary treatment requirements for direct discharges from industrial sectors, including the removal of micropollutants and heavy metals.

Romania, declared in its entirety a sensitive area within the Danube basin, is facing an infringement procedure (C 668/25) for insufficient implementation of Directive 91/271/EEC. The NTPA-001 and NTPA-002 norms set strict pollutant load limits for discharge into natural receivers or sewer networks.

Fines for illegal wastewater discharge can reach 60,000 lei for legal entities (GEO 195/2005), and compliance pressure grows every year.

Operating principle

  1. The vacuum pump generates negative pressure in the system;
  2. Wastewater is drawn into the boiling chamber;
  3. Air is repeatedly compressed and heated up to 130°C, transferring heat to the wastewater;
  4. At the boiling temperature of 85°C (under vacuum), water vapour is produced;
  5. The vapours are cleaned in the separator and condensed into high-purity distillate;
  6. Thermal energy from condensation is recovered to preheat the fresh wastewater;
  7. The distillate is discharged to the sewer or reused as raw water in manufacturing processes, while the concentrate is evacuated;
  8. The process restarts automatically — fully autonomous operation.
